Manchester Metrolink was Britain;’s first street-based tram. Several towns are connected into it, and the suburbs, into Manchester city centre, to redeveloped Salford Quays and Old Trafford, and to Manchester United football club. Trams run every 6 minutes, with extra in rush hour.
In 2007 the system carried 20 million passengers. Three new routes are planned, costing £575 million between them. This is expected to take 5 million car journeys off the roads annually; capacity will increase from 55,000 per day to 90,000.
